Camping: Kick the Canned Food to the Curb
Even though you’ll be washing the smell of campfire out of your hair for days afterward, camping is always worth it. It is arguably one of the best, quintessential summer activities. However, as with many summer outings, it can be easy to let our nutrition goals slip over a weekend at the campground. Here are some tips to help you keep nutrition in mind during a weekend in the great outdoors.
Plan ahead! We all make that last-minute grocery trip en route to the campground. In doing so, it’s easy to make impulsive decisions. The last-minute grocery trip may be unavoidable, but the impulse-buys can be! Make a list of what you’re going to eat and only bring those items with you.
Don’t leave out your fruits and veggies! Many fruit and veg options don’t have to be kept cold, including apples, bananas, oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, avocados, peaches, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, plums, and others. You can make a side salad with any of these items, or eat them as a snack. Produce is an essential part of a healthy diet and shouldn’t be left behind!
Cooler cool! Keep lean meats, eggs, cheese, and of course, Simply For Life sausages in a cooler packed with ice. Grass fed beef burgers or chicken skewers are also a great option. As long as you replenish the ice as needed, these items should last for a couple of days. Mind you, opening and closing the cooler continuously won’t keep it as cold, and your food may spoil more quickly. Know that hotdogs aren’t the only option!
Whole grains! Bread (think whole grain or Ezekiel) does not have to be refrigerated and can be used to prepare sandwiches and toast. Other options, like brown rice, can be boiled in a pot over the fire or cooked before you leave and then reheated once you reach the campsite.
Good morning sunshine! For breakfast, try oatmeal with fruit or, the classic, bacon and eggs (pending you have proper storage methods to keep them cold over night!).
Mix for the trail. Trail mix is a great, healthy snack that will give you energy for hiking and other activities while you are camping. Combine nuts, dried fruit, and even some dark chocolate, and portion it out into containers for a quick and easy pick-me-up at the campsite.
Snack attack! Besides trail mix, you don’t have to opt for the classic potato chips for a snack while camping or at the beach. Sprouted tortilla chips, like Way Better, and organic popcorn are great replacements for a salty snack. Fruits and veggies that don’t need refrigeration, like apples, bananas, carrots, etc. are an easy snack as well. There are also great on-the-go bar options, like a Larabar, that are quick and delicious.
